This makes a pleasant Walk and Talk therapy session or Outdoor Therapy session easily accessible.

What is Walk and Talk Therapy?

Walk and Talk therapy is what it sounds like. You can go on a walk with your therapist during your session. You could also walk to the local park and find a bench or spot in the grass to chat before walking back.

We keep white umbrellas in the office for shade and if you and your therapist are feeling really adventurous for rain walks, we always have water available in the waiting room.

Why is Walk and Talk Therapy a good option?.

There are 3 main reasons that Walk and Talk Therapy
could be a good option for you.

Bi lateral movement (like walking) while we are talking can help our brians work better in some therapeutically relevant ways. We know that there may be connections to increased ability to regulate while processing trauma when we are able to move while we talk as well as some studies that show more parts of the brain are active if we Walk and talk. You may get more out of your therapy if you walk while you talk.

Getting some exercise in your day. We see many folks who are busy and may not easily find time for a walk in another part of their day, so that being able to book a long walk in with their therapy is a win.

Being Outside is shown to support emotional regulation and well being.

Looking out into the world rather than right at your therapist can make therapy easier for some people.

What are the considerations?

Not every therapist will want to offer Walk and Talk Therapy. Some of our therapists may have their own reasons for wanting to keep therapy in the office. Additionally, you will need to consider that the conversation that you are having may be overheard by people. While you and your therapist can make efforts to maintain privacy, you will be outside and we can not guarantee privacy at all times. You and your therapist can discuss which of your sessions feel best suited for Walk and Talk Therapy.

You may run into people you know or your therapist knows. This is rare and in our experience easily worked around, but it is a consideration. You will make a plan with your therapist how you would like to handle a situation like that should it arise.

Truly this does give you a lot of flexibility. Because we’re able to serve people in parts of the state where accessing mental health services is more difficult. But it is important to note that pesky requirement about needing to be physically in the same state (Colorado in our case) what your therapist has their clinical license.
